Mind your language
FYI:
I earned RM15 sitting for an English exam in the morning.
By night I've spent all of it on food and transport.
My point? Wouldn't it be great if everyday you earned some money which will last you all day and the next day have it reimbursed to you?
That would be so cool.
My other point? Cost of living is expensive!
------------------------------------------------------
Recently, there's been this issue on how we're not to "misuse" or "incorrectly use" Bahasa.
I heard in on the prime time news and my reaction was like: What the...?!
Ok..we know the grammatically correct way of using Bahasa - we learned that in school!
"Saya tak suka minum air kelapa. Awak suka?"[I don't like to drink coconut juice. You do?]
"Air kelapa dua!"[Two (glasses of) coconut juice please.]
But then...
"Kite tak suka ar minum air kelape. Awak suke ek?"[I don't like to drink coconut juice. You do?]
"Air kelape duer!"[Two (glasses of) coconut juice please.]
So they tell us to use Bahasa correctly....
Fine.
I'm not the one who says "kite" or "saye" instead of "saya" [I]
Or says "ek?" [really?]
Or says "duer" instead of "dua" [two]
Or says "kelape" instead of "kelapa" [coconut]
If they want people to use Bahasa correctly, they should start listening to how they themselves use it.
How can they ask us to properly use Bahasa when they're not doing it themselves?
Ketam tak boleh mengajar anaknya berjalan dengan lurus.
[Crabs cannot teach its babies to walk straight.]
Or as they would: "Ketam tak leh ajar anaknye berjalan ngan lurus."
Ok..if they claim its a dialect then we know that's not true...
Dialects are like the those "hang" "depa" and "kamek" "kitak" not "kite" and "saye"...
Another thing I don't get is the issue of using English.
WTF say English is bahasa penjajah [foreigner's language]...it's the international language lah!
(and we very well know we've managed to localise it with the lahs and the kahs at the end of an English sentence.)
Today I sat for this English Language Proficiency Exam.
It had the whole package like MUET(Malaysian University English Test) - Reading, Writing and Listening. And also an additional "Grammar" section added into it.
We also had to fill in this survey on how comfortable we were with using English. We were given statements and told to choose whether we "strongly agree", "agree", "moderately agree", "moderately disagree", "disagree" or "strongly disagree" with the statements.
Some of the statements were kinda like these:
"I do not feel comfortable using English because it is a foreign language."
"If I use English it make me feel un-Malaysian."
"I would rather use my mother toungue rather than English."
Truth be told, I'm worried with such a mindset of some Malaysians...
If you're Malaysian then you're Malaysian lah!
So what if you speak English or Korean or French!
So what if you prefer English or Korean or French to Bahasa!
That does not make you un-Malaysian lah!
Malaysia is always referred to as "multiracial" but they usually only stress the three major races while the rest are grouped as "others". And a certain language is the national language and a certain religion the national religion.
Who cares?!
I am categorized under "others".
I am more comfortable with the "foreigner's language" rather than the national one.
And I not of the national religion.
But I am was, still, am and will always be Malaysian lah!
Don't be so...close-minded!

Totally agree with you on Malaysian speaking English or French or whatever foreign language does not make one become un-Malaysian. Only 'sempit' minded people think that way. They should look at it different way, they should be proud a Malaysian can master so many languages other than Bahasa Melayu, and proud to use it. And most of the time, people speak in the language that he/she feel comfortable with, so it's not a matter of sounding arrogant or disrecpect to other :)
